Fit, presentation and the questions to ask before sampling a custom packaging insert.

Begin with the contents
An insert needs to work with the product's size, weight and intended position as well as the surrounding box. PackMojo's insert guidance describes selection around these factors rather than a single universal material. Use that as a starting question, not a ready-made specification: your own product and distribution requirements still need review.

Prepare a useful product reference
Our suggested brief includes dimensions, weight, photographs, the areas that should remain visible and any areas that should not be pressed or rubbed. Include caps, cables, accessories and labels in their final position. If several products are packed together, identify their exact versions and quantities.
Compare material approaches in context
Paperboard, corrugated structures, molded pulp and foam constructions can offer different ways to position a product. Do not choose solely from the appearance of an empty insert. Discuss the proposed support, the opening experience and what a sample will demonstrate. Avoid broad claims that one material is always protective or environmentally preferable.
Check removal as well as retention
A product should not simply look tidy in a photograph. Try placing it into and removing it from the sample, then assess finger access, the opening direction and any contact with the surface. Check whether the insert remains seated while the product is removed and whether all parts return to the intended position.
Approve the system
Review the box, insert and actual contents together. Document what was checked and any remaining changes. Where shipping performance matters, agree appropriate testing for the complete pack; visual fit alone does not establish resistance to the hazards of a delivery route.
