Understand the effect, the artwork decisions and the sample questions before adding foil to packaging.

What hot foil stamping does
Hot foil stamping transfers a decorative layer from a carrier onto a surface using a heated tool and pressure. Foils are available with different appearances, including metallic, colored and holographic effects. It is a finishing process, not simply a metallic color selected in a screen image. Iggesund's technical handbook explains the transfer process and the importance of the paperboard surface.

Start with the element you want to emphasize
Our recommendation for a restrained packaging identity is to try one deliberate focal point: a wordmark, a short line or a graphic detail. Compare it with an unfoiled version before adding more coverage. Large coverage is a design choice, not an automatic signal of better quality.
Review the actual surface and artwork
The paper surface, foil and process settings affect adhesion and appearance. Ask for a sample on the proposed wrap or paper, especially where texture or another surface treatment is involved. Do not assume that the same visual effect on a different paper can be reproduced without review.
Separate foil from other effects
A metallic appearance, a raised surface and an indented surface are distinct design decisions. Be explicit about which effect the artwork intends. If several processes are combined, ask how their alignment will be reviewed on a physical sample. A rendered highlight cannot demonstrate the result of manufacturing.
Questions for your brief
Identify the artwork areas intended for foil, the desired visual reference, the proposed paper and whether the box includes other finishes. Let the production review determine workable detail sizes and process choices rather than relying on a generic minimum copied from another supplier. Website images here are brand demonstrations, not foil test specimens.
